Bourbon coffee

Bourbon is one of the two founding arabica lineages in cultivation — the stock the French carried from Yemen to the island of Bourbon, now Réunion — and the parent of Caturra, Catuai, SL28 and much else.

It yields poorly by modern standards and is susceptible to leaf rust, but it is prized for sweetness and a rounded, layered acidity. Rwanda and Burundi are almost entirely planted to it; it remains common across Latin America.

Cherries ripen red, yellow or orange depending on the sub-variety, and the colour is often used to distinguish lots on the bag.
