Coffee from Panama
Panama is where Gesha became famous: Hacienda La Esmeralda entered it in the 2004 Best of Panama, it won by a distance, and coffee's price ceiling has never come back down.
Boquete and Volcán, on the slopes of Volcán Barú, produce tiny volumes at extreme altitude. Panamanian Gesha regularly sets auction records — lots have cleared four figures per pound — which makes the country less a supplier than a proving ground.
The reference profile is jasmine, bergamot and papaya, with a body closer to tea than to coffee. Panamanian Catuai and Pacamara are excellent and cost a fraction of the headline lots.
