Coffee blends

A blend combines coffees from more than one origin or lot, built for a consistent flavour that a single seasonal harvest cannot hold.

Espresso blends dominate the category, because a good espresso needs body, sweetness and acidity in proportions few single origins provide alone, and because a café cannot change its house shot every eight weeks.

Blending is a craft rather than a compromise, but it does trade traceability for consistency: a blend's components change through the year, usually without the label changing.
